the wonderful world of albert kahn

a while ago i caught a couple of the bbc programs documenting the lifes work of albert kahn, a millionaire banker and philanthropist who wanted to capture the world and its inhabitants in full technicolour. he hoped that by showing people the beauty and diversity of one anothers cultures he would promote world peace.....i like your thinking mr kahn.

my mum has just reminded me about the book... surely a must have for all the old photo addicts like me.

car boot haul...

as always i could have bought a lot more but i was meant to be shopping for others so i had to rein myself in... personally i'd be chuffed if someone gave me 10 mismatched mid winter tea sets...i realise my dad and brother may not be so thrilled

ultimate comfort food

smoked haddock and parmesan pot.
poach haddock fillets for a few minutes in milk or water then drain the fluid, (this gets rid of some of the salt.)
remove skin and flake into an oven proof dish then cover with equal parts milk and single cream.
add pepper then grate parmesan on the top. place under a moderate grill until golden brown and bubbling. serve with toasted seed bread...devour, using toast to spoon into mouth.

at the request of my grandma mrs b...im trying to draw again...all she wants for christmas is something i've drawn....which should be a piece of cake for someone who did a degree in illustration....but its been a while... a looooong while. theses are meant to be of me. errrrm like i said....been a while.

gigs i have been to this month

pretty firm favourites around these parts; the broken family band played cargo, end of the road xmas party.

darren hayman of hefner , the handsome family , jeremy warmsly, the accidental and the ukulele orchestra of great britain.

awe inspiring sculpture

this is the incredible work of genius and kanetic sculpor theo jansen. he creates creatures that live and roam the shores of holland.  he predicts that eventually these forms of life will live in herds on the beaches. they will not get their energy from food but from the wind. watch his charming lecture on ted talks.  the man has reinvented the wheel! hats off.

so busy with 30th birthday celebrations, cake baking, present making, watching of newly installed cable tv...i keep forgetting to blog. im starting to panic now because 'christmas drink' fortnight has begun...which basically means i am doing that every night between now and the 23rd...i can feel my liver twinging in objection already...gulp.

just been to see the ukulele orchestra of great britain... it has inspired me to invest in a better {actually tunable} ukulele and resurrect my new years resolution of last year...to learn to play it.

vintage heaven...

for anyone like who likes to dress up...you'll find some amazing frocks on this site.
this one would make a stunning wedding dress. for something a bit cheaper there is a fantastic quarterly vintage clothes fair at battersea art centre which I went to last week. i picked up a beautiful 1940's tea dress for £50, it was an aladdin's cave for vintage clothes lovers like me. the next one is on the 19th jan... and i for one am there.

to christmas shop....

or to not christmas shop? that is the question....there are never ending special offers out there designed to lure us back onto the high street...but im still not feeling the pull... in fact you'd pretty much have to drag me kicking and screaming. the high street has become so samey and bland im just not interested { I know whats happened to me??} and I cant imagine id find anything out there that id want to actually give anyone.

im not planning on being a total scrooge... I just want to give more thoughtful gifts these days. im thinking home made, hand made and second hand and Internet sourced this christmas...who could fail to be delighted with an ebay treasure such as this or some affordable art or anything from supernice ...or unique personalised tee like this one from half a conversation? or a custim made i heart * insert name here* tee from here

see.... thats pretty much got my family covered already and no need to even leave the house.

im sure anyone would appreciate a 1930's gramophone...why wouldnt they?

I know you....

....even without the bouffant joe starsmore, you can't fool me.

the trouble with life.....

there just isnt enough time to fit everything in, boring things like work can really get in the way of fun.... can someone please tell me how you're meant to fit in working and actually living life?all that personal admin you know paying bills, cleaning, laundry, shopping.... and then theres hobbying, holidaying, culture soaking and socialising ...AND blogging ? my *to do* list is never ending its really quite demoralising.

one solution would be to just stop adding to it, I know but the thing is it consists of equally really really important things that I want to get done....like sample the legendary pizza at franco manca, test drive ondine's new stunt kite, go back to life drawing class, buy a carpet, write to mrs b, learn to web design, cruise for new tunes on emusic, paint my floor boards, revisit america and thailand and france. go to a car boot sale, make christmas cards, get tickets for la clique, go to la clique, attend many of the cool things I read about in my weekly subscription to time out...and so on. how can i possibly cram this in to two piddly days at the end of the week? {evenings dont really count in the winter, theyre too dark, my body thinks its night time and curling up on the sofa with a cup of tea and csi is just about all I can manage}

anyway so I havent posted in a while due hectic work and if im honest, dark evening induced laziness, so im just going to let it all out in one go:

some of the things that have caught my eye this week....

jamie lidell singing to his cat.

lennon interview...found by typing *cool animation* into youtube...

I have been dreaming of escaping somewhere far away...and sunny. its not that I dont like england, its just that I dont like winter and dark evenings and rainy weekends.
I always said Id do another big trip when I turned 30...that time has come and travel plans are yet to be laid. (another * to do* for the list)

this is harpy my new flickr favourite, Im in love with her photos, all of them, especially the california set. I think thats where I'll go next... in my dreams at least.

I have done most of my day dreaming to the sound of okkervil river this week... mmm-mmmm this song; sad but sweet.

and finally for some art:

irana douer im liking your style.

jim houser; Im liking yours too...even though you really overuse the word rad in this interview. I forgive you.

you know I'm a sucker for a collage, there are some nice ones to be found here on martin o'neill's site

and one last thing....in case you hadn't been told in a while;

oh yes you are! from this site which has nothing to do with this site.... im glad to see people are spreading the word.

my 30th birthday...the best ever.

I did it! and without referring to the manual once. It turns out I was doing it right all along but the poor little laptop was taking so long to compute and I am the most impatient person on the planet which meant I kept aborting before it got the chance to get the job done.

So as promised {mum} here is a taster of some of the 1978 weekend....

A youth hostel on the south downs with a view of the sea. kites and walks and picnics in the golden autumnal sunshine. a camp fire, harmonious song and ukulele lessons. A special 70's buffet complete with prawn ring and cheese on cocktail sticks {natch}. a delicious feast {or 2 or 3} . balloons and party games. dressing fancy and disco dancing!
All that plus 21 of the best people in the world, who made sure I didnt have to do anything but have immeasurable amounts of fun all weekend long...
I am so lucky to count you as friends.

you made it the best bithday ever.

Friday, 7 November 2008

Im officially the lamest photography enthusiast in the land.

...I still haven't worked out how to download photos from the new camera ( nikon d60)
I took them all in raw which seems to be confusing the poor little laptop no end ( ok yeah and me). It just freezes with the enormity of the task every time I try to even open the files. i know this is something to do with compressing files and I know that eventually I will have to pick up the manual... but at the moment Im still holding out for divine intervention. when I do finally manage to get to grips with this *idiot proof'* technology, there will be some cracking birthday weekend pics plus some other pretty things Ive seen since.

what a day!

I just wouldn't have believed it if you'd told me a month ago. really not in my wildest dreams could i have hoped that america would actually vote in an intelligent {first shocker}, black man {second shocker} who is also fairly easy on the eye {see above...yes that really is the young president elect smoking a fag...or maybe even a spliff who knows?}

I cannot tell you the tremendous feeling of hope this fills me with. This news is like a ray of sunshine at the end of a damp and gloomy tunnel. Suddenly instead impending doom I see endless possibility...the times they are a changin and i for one feel kind of giddy with excitement about that... well done America, never thought I'd say it but you should be proud.

Maybe becasue I have the 70's on the brain....

the end of an era

on monday i turn 30. up until 2 weeks ago I had been looking forward to this. I have spent the past year mentally prepping myself.

I careered through twenties with an air of recklessness, symptomatic of the noughties { new labour, a new millennium, 3 credit cards, economic boom etc} not really achieving much along the way { apart from some amazing friends and {some!} memories} I enjoyed it too but in the past year things have slowly changed.

nights out have become fewer in favour of dinner parties. I think about the future beyond the next weekend. I pay more attention to current affairs. I bake more, I ride a bike. I spend more time pursuing hobbies and passions. I am more selective about how and who I spend my precious spare time with. I follow fashion less and my ever developing impeccable sense of style and individuality more. I appreciate music because it is good not because it is cool. I know how to wire up a plug and change a fuse. I understand mortgage stuff....sort of {well not really}...Im as ready as ready can be, BRING IT ON.

So why do I feel a bit weird?... I think maybe I feel sad that the end of an era has arrived in more ways that one. It was really fun being carefree, I loved not giving a s**t!! living life in the fast lane ( with help of loads cheap credit) I did so many exciting things in my twenties ...they were pretty rock and roll as it goes. Turning 30 feels a bit like bidding farewell to a dear old friend..
In truth I believe Im ready to slow down a bit, live a little more calmly and considerately. The slower road is often the most interesting one so I hear...after all, you never know whats round the next bend.

Tuesday, 7 October 2008

I woke at 5 am feeling inexplicably anxious. couldn't get back to sleep so got up. someone had stolen the back wheel of my bike so i got the tube to work. we had a 9 am meeting where we were told that no one would be getting a bonus or a pay rise this year ( obviously this was not a surprise).I found out one of my favourite merchandisers eric had been made redundant, the company he works for, that we have production with is on the brink of going into administration i think. did my expenses from HK trip and realised i owe £200.
I think the anxiety is about turning 30...or maybe the credit crunch...or being trapped im my job....or maybe losing it...or maybe dying alone and unloved having achieved nothing...or maybe it was realising that paul newman really is dead! its strange, anxiety really isnt my style. anyway today was well pony.

this usually cheers me up...

nope even that didnt work still feeling BLEAK :-(

...is this a 12 year old boy or a really small man pretending?
either way prepare to pick your chin off the floor...behold the finger picking wizardry of sungha jung

other peoples scribble

... I challange you to not get sucked in, its surprisingly easy to waste time on this website....an hour of my life...gone.

nice one from micah p

this is the clever thing i have just figured out... if you ever find yourself at a party and you feel compelled to take charge of the music { no no that never happens to me} Rather than risking leaving your ipod at the possibly not too familiar venue { no no thats never happened to me either} now all you have to do is youtube any song you wish to infilct on the other revellers...hey presto! instant free dukebox with video included. im sure this is old news but im loving it.

if youre out there prince charming...this would seal the deal

youd have to go to redhook brooklyn to get it mind you.

a ray of sunshine in the grey...

This is the first thing that made me laugh today.

This is the second:
a conversation with vida; the short round, old african lady who cleans the offices.

" hi vida, how's it going?"
" hi ethal" she calls me ethal even though its not my name and she knows its not
"aww Im ok apart from my eye!"
"oh yeah....what did you do? that looks sore vida."
" sex games!" she booms....followed the loudest dirtiest chuckle known to man. heads turn and she just waddles away shaking her head, still laughing.

I love her! she is a ray of sunshine in my day.

I suggest you have a butchers at this site or better still get yourself to columbia rd, the flower market. on sundays its a perfect place to go for breakfast at one of the many snackeries. then you can cruse the boutiques and shop/galleries {such as the afore linked} and go home with arm fulls of cheap flowers ...that is if you stick it out till closing time when all remaining blooms are 1/2 price.
