jumpin for joy

and just like that everything is better.  spring has sprung in london. i had the best weekend! it involved more 30th b'days, campfires, music and games. seeing the sunrise with old friends and new friends then basking in the sunday sun.  something has awakened in us all... its really good to be back in the land of the living.

freedom

this is the first day of the rest of my life. the sun is out the sky is clear.  today i begin writing lists. writing lists and making phone calls.  putting some shape to the plans that have been floating around my head.

im chuffed to bits that i have been given a way out, a new way forward.
 if nothing else the past 7 years have taught me how important it is that i believe in what i do for a living  {which i didnt really for years}
focus was never my forte when i was younger and when you cant see where you're going its easy to fall into the wrong job.

i know what i like and what im good at now.  the good thing is that life seems to happen  in chapters and as one closes a new one opens and presents you with new opportunities.

i made a promise to myself in my early 20's {which seemed increasingly implausible as time passed and i got further up that wrong career ladder and acquired a mortgage along the way} that aged 30, id get out and see some more of the world.

now that im there, i find myself in a situation as if by magic, with no ties and a bit of money. it feels to me like this is fate beckoning. remember resolutions no.2 and 18? i have a list of places i want to visit and this may be my last chance to just take off!
so for now, while the economy is on its knees, im putting my future in england on hold and following the other dream.
yes it will break my heart to leave the friends and family here but im not done with adventure yet, i need to shake things up a bit before i finally let them settle.
I have applied to do a gruelling intensive english teaching course {gulp} and if all goes to plan, i'll head to japan first and then south america.  its all a bit scary,  i have so much to do but it all feels very doable... and very exciting.

square america.

its an addiction for me.  for as long as i can remember i have been drawn to old photos. trips to see both sets of grandparents throughout my life typically consisted of me arriving, muttering a few words of greeting over my shoulder as i headed to the beloved box of old  family photos ( in both cases they were dusty jumbled boxes, not albums which i kind of love)
i would shuffle through them handful at a time, inhaling their sweet musty smell , studying every silvery frozen gaze, every outfit, haircut, expression. turning them over trying the make out the unfamiliar old fashioned names.   i would spread them out all over the floor and play a  kind of memory game, matching faces from one photo to another in their different guises and different ages. trying to spot siblings, spouses, parents, grandparents. i learnt a lot about our family that way, by studying the faces of my relatives past and present, piecing together the history, frozen moment at a time.
a visit to square America is the online equivalent to this ritual. a current favourite collection is

incidentally the last photo posted looks exactly like my friend kaito.... its spooky man!

what a view.

Berlin

you know, i think this might be the nearest old fashioned photo booth to london. seriously ive searched  for one in the uk but to no avail...theyre completely extinct!  im telling you, i'd travel a long way for one of these.

Animals

Have you forgotten what we were like then
when we were still first rate
and the day came fat with an apple in its mouth
it's no use worrying about Time
but we did have a few tricks up our sleeves
and turned some sharp corners
the whole pasture looked like our meal
we didn't need speedometers
we could manage cocktails out of ice and water
I wouldn't want to be faster
or greener than now if you were with me O you
were the best of all my days

i love his work so much it brings a tear to my eye.

dancedancedance!

i've had dance on the brain this week after a conversation with lottie who is working on a project based on the the mysterious dancing plague of 1518 . this strange event took place in strasbourg where one by one, for reasons that cant really be explained,  the victims began dancing uncontrollably and were unable to stop, eventually they collapsed and died of heart attacks or exhaustion! death by dancing!!
dont get me wrong  there is pretty much nothing better than losing yourself in music... so i suppose if youre gonna to go.... why not let it be in a state of exhausted euphoria? {to hell with the blisters and the cardiovascular strain} but im guessing the victims of 1518 did it without music...have you ever been to a silent disco and taken your head set off?  thats the surreal scene im imagining.
i have always favoured watching people express themselves through dance rather hearing them speak on stage. theatre has a tendency to make me feel uncomfortable  dance and music on the other hand transport me.
so anyway lottie asked for my input .....i got completely sidetracked in my research and instead I've spent hours on youtube watching old favourites which are brilliant although fairly far from what she had in mind im quite sure!
anyway for those who need convincing, here is some excellent dance for your enjoyment.
